TRUEMAGE.COM The letter
Verone steps onto a dead gas-station lot at night, bat on his shoulder, fading copies of him trailing behind.

How a Case Arrives

The Shift puts Verone where the case is. The Whisper is the assignment. Three registers: mundane, apocalyptic, other realities.

"He does not drive to the case. The Shift puts him where the case is."

Two things deliver a case to Verone, and he controls neither of them.

The Shift

It moves him across space and, when it wants to, across realities. Between jobs it brings him back to the place he rests.

A case can open with the Shift pulling him out of there, and close with him carried back.

The Whisper

"The Whisper is the assignment." It arrives when he does, and it's never a full briefing.

It's the phone ringing in a detective's office, except "he cannot decline the call and he does not always know who is calling."

Three registers

Mundane. "A working somebody botched." "A small wrong thing in an ordinary place." Most of the early ones live here.

Apocalyptic. "A reality-ending pressure." Rare, and getting worse.

Other realities. "The Shift carries him sideways into somewhere that is not here at all." It doesn't happen often.

Time

A case runs in order, start to finish. Verone doesn't.

Time doesn't run in a line for him. For him it can all happen at once.
