An empty all-night diner: a long counter, bolted stools, a pie under glass, and a red star sign out on a dark road.

The All-Star Diner

A roadside diner, home of the All-Star Special. The diner itself is the sentient one. Staff differ at every location. An entrance, and an easy one.

Home of the All-Star Special.

Whoever's on the grill tonight, the diner is the one that's awake. "The diner itself is the sentient one."

What it is

A roadside diner, liminal the way any all-night diner is at three in the morning: fluorescent light, pie sweating under a dome, everybody in the booths on the way to somewhere else.

It's one of the four roadside franchises that sit in the in-between and open onto the Above and the Below. Easy entrances, but entrances.

On the road

Roads here are liminal spaces a person can drive. The diner is one of the places they run past.

The file has the special, the staff and the sentience. Nobody filed a menu.

The staff

"Different staff work in each location." The people change from one diner to the next. The diner doesn't.

Whether the staff know what they work for isn't on file.

The custodian

Rule five: every liminal space has a custodian. Most have somebody. At the All-Star, the custodian is the building.

Standing

Open. The special's on the menu.

Source of record: Cleared. Revised 2026-10-18.
