A motel at night: a row of numberless doors under bare bulbs, a star-topped pole sign, the office lit and empty.

The Starlite Motel

A motel in every city, all kept by one blind man. A door to the Above and the Below, and an easy one.

There's a Starlite Motel in every city. Same name, same spelling.

Same man behind the desk.

Melvin is blind, and he "keeps watch over every Starlite Motel." Verone put him there.

What it is

A recurring motel, and one of the four roadside franchises: ordinary places on the road that are also doors. It sits in the in-between, which is Verone's jurisdiction, and it opens onto the Above and the Below.

Easy entrances, but entrances. This one rents by the night. Where a given door lets out isn't on file.

The keeper

The fifth rule of crossing says every liminal space has a custodian. The Starlite has the plainest answer in the file: a man at a desk, with the vacancy sign lit over his head.

How one man sits at every desk isn't written down. Neither is what Melvin sees.

Standing

Open. Melvin's at the desk.

He always is.
