The Between

Every trip through the Between happens on a road, and every road has a custodian.

The Between is the jurisdiction of movement: roads, thresholds, dream corridors, liminal transit, missing time, impossible hallways, wrong exits, recurring rooms. How things move. It's Verone's jurisdiction, "kind of like DC."

It's "Lit from the wrong angle."

Custodians

The fifth rule of crossing says every liminal space has a custodian. Out here the rule has an address, nailed to a particular stretch of road, and the road's own custodian is the Courier. The other four rules are kept under The Law of Crossings.

Bleed

When the Between leaks into the Middle, the word is bleed.

GZS Radio is one. It broadcasts from gaps in the prison system, and on this side it exists as a bleed from out there. "The signal is real in both directions."

Not every bleed comes with a signal. When Stillwell calls, Verone is out on a routine one: threshold-sealing on a Between bleed that's come up through a bathroom drain at a truck stop in rural Indiana.
