The file is one laminated card. It came in the original signing envelope, and it reads, in full:
BORT
No address. No contact. No photograph. A smiley face drawn in the corner.
The record office can't tell whether the name belongs to a person, a town, or a joke. There's no line on the card for when anything ended. The card has one field and it's filled in.
Deliveries
Sixteen tracks of broken machinery and deadpan nonsense, each in a folder named BORT. The same name sixteen times. The computer stopped warning about the duplicates and just files them. So does the record office.
The titles tell most of it. There's a run called Flesh//error.*, which is another act's name; see Deprecated Berlin. One track is the word Bort, six times, in a flat little voice over a beat that keeps tripping over itself. Count verified. Six.
Who came out
Bort. Whether that's one party or several, the card doesn't say. Every track Bort sends arrives under the same name. The record office has never seen a folder called anything else.
Deliveries continue.
On file
One envelope, one card, sixteen folders. The only mark on the card that isn't a word is the smiley, and the laminator got to it first.
