Verone has a line about these stores, and he says it in capitals: it's always the same, some small-town Happy Mart in the middle of nowhere gets overrun when some woo-woo goes south, because corporate assholes and magick don't mix well.
Happy Mart is a retail chain, one of the four roadside franchises along with the Starlite Motel, the All-Star Diner and Lucky's. All four sit in the in-between and open onto the Above and the Below. The other three are easy doors. Happy Mart isn't. Its aisles under bad fluorescents head the list of grimy American places where this world does its business.
From there the list runs on through cracked parking lots, desert motels, cheap apartments, old strip malls and government sedans, and it ends in corporate lobbies that smell like floor cleaner and blood.
The light
"The cosmic is hidden inside bad lighting." The shortest description of this world goes to the same fixture: "Cosmic horror trapped inside bad American retail lighting."
The mark
A white smiley on black, over the words HAPPY MART.
The Happy Face Monster comes out of Happy Mart. It wears the same smiley, yellow, for a head. One of its names is Happy Mart Demon. Its notes call it "Corporate symbol given meat," and its barcode tag reads:
"ALWAYS OPEN. ALWAYS WATCHING."
