Origin
PHOENIX, ARIZONA, 1979

Nathaniel James Verone is the Last True Mage: sheriff of the hidden jurisdictions, enforcer of the Accords, and the current human address of an office older than he is. His file card gives his role as "OCCULT DRIFTER, ENFORCER. KEEPER OF THE ACCORDS." and his status as "ALLEGEDLY, THE LAST OF HIS LINE."

Allegedly.

Particulars

His card has his age as unknown, looking late twenties to early thirties.

He comes out of Phoenix. In 1979 he was about twenty-three, broke, and fronting a punk band called ANGER INC. That is where the mantle found him. The rest of that night is not in this file.

The mantle keeps him at late twenties or early thirties, and on him it's eerie. "Time does not land on him correctly."

Lean, not muscular. Wiry, road-worn. 150 pounds (68 kg).

Appearance

Wild spiky blond hair, pale, near-white in low light. Clean-shaven. No goatee, ever.

One eye is blue and one is white. The white eye is the office. The blue eye is the man.

A dark shirt with a large white left hand on it and a single eye in the palm is the one he's known by. Black sigil tattoos, neck to toe.

The rest of the wardrobe changes, and some nights so does the shirt. The ink and the face don't. A mage mark on his right palm.

He looks like he "crawled out of a cursed convenience store at 2:17 AM."

Carried

His weapon is the Sacred Bat, HJ-527-Q, a League relic.

A flip burner phone, a pack of Knockouts, a skull lighter, a book of occult notes with an eye-in-palm cover, a chain wallet. Sometimes the Infinite Mysteries Source Deck.

His energy drink is Black Lightning.

Function

  • Investigate jurisdictional crimes.
  • Enforce hidden border law.
  • Negotiate with entities.
  • Traverse the Shift.
  • Read the Source Deck.
  • Use the bat when negotiation fails.
  • Fight to stay Nathaniel instead of becoming only the office.

Voice

A flat Western cadence, profane and precise. Jokes are wards. Lines are short.

"He does not talk like a lore manual."

This file does.

Two of his: "The floors are bleeding into each other." "Something's chewing through the county lines."

The danger

"His danger is not death. His danger is becoming only the office." He's "a dangerous, exhausted, sarcastic occult drifter carrying an office that wants to eat his name."

What keeps him himself is a short list, kept under The Mantle. Jon Smiles is at the top of it.

Address

None in the ordinary world. Between jobs, the Shift brings him back to the place he rests.

The note

At the foot of his file card:

Verone is not a hero. He is a necessary problem. He uses whatever works. He keeps the normals safe from what they can't see. If that makes him a villain, fine. He doesn't care.
