The Whisper is the True Mage's office, felt: pressure, instinct, half-heard warning. It's how the mantle talks, and nobody is speaking. What it carries is "what the office feels, not what the truth is."

The assignment

"The Whisper is the assignment." The Shift gets Verone to the place, and the Whisper tells him what needs doing once he's standing in it.

"Not a full briefing." He gets "A pressure, a direction, a wrongness he can feel the shape of."

He walks in knowing something's off, and not knowing what. Between them, the Shift and the Whisper are how a case arrives.

How far to trust it

Not far.
