Somebody has to clean up after gods die.
The office came from the Source, as a check on the architect of the cage. In a human reality it takes the shape people give it: an egregore of belief in "someone who cleans up after gods die."
That's the mantle, the office of the True Mage. Nathaniel Verone is its current vessel.
What it does
It burned the Accord sigils into his body. Those are the Living Sigils.
It talks to him through the Whisper, which is pressure, instinct and half-heard warning, and which can't be fully trusted.
It's the channel for deep magick too: source-level or architecture-level work, paid for in Accord enforcement, reality damage and identity erosion.
Anchors
Without something that proves he's Nathaniel and not the office, Verone comes back from the Shift "more mantle than man." Seven things do the proving:
- his name, Nathaniel James Verone
- a true memory from before the mantle
- the Infinite Mysteries Source Deck
- a personal object of his own
- Jon Smiles, the primary anchor
- Jenn Zer0, under specific conditions
- a promise he refuses to break
The office and the man
It's "an office that wants to eat his name," and the risk to him is "becoming only the office." It holds his age where it wants it, whatever the calendar says.
"He is not a chosen one. He is the current address for a thing that predates him and will outlast him."
