A porch at the end of a bleached road: a box fan aimed at a guitar amp, a cooler, a drum throne, heat shimmer off the dirt.

Sunscreen State

Hot country, a porch, a fan aimed at an amp. The county lost the house's address in 1971. The porch is still standing.

Closed. Porch standing, bill paid.

Hot country, bleached out, a road with a house on it and a porch on the house. Everything ran on a cooler of beer and a fan "pointed at the amp so it does not quit in the heat."

The address

The house lost it. The county clerk swears it has had none on file since 1971. Porch is still there, screen door and all. Nobody's paperwork agrees with it anymore.

The report takes 1971 as the time of death, on the clerk's authority. The house stood after that date. Only the file went.

The porch

Junior Vale, guitar and vocals. Cash Dillard, bass and harmonica. Wade Pruitt, drums and cooler duty, who owns the porch, "or did, before the address went missing."

The porch came with them. It stands inside the station on a lot with no number. They cut six tracks on it over two weekends, Back Porch Vote and Peach and Sunscreen State among them, all of it "warm and slow and a little sunstruck." The screen door slams in the takes. A dog barks on Peach. They left it in because it landed on the beat.

The account

The power account on the house is still open, and the band pays it. The utility has never sent a payment back.

Somebody has to run the fan.
