The Lost Highways

Route 66, old Route 666 in Arizona, and US 70 through Waverly, Tennessee. Signs change. The record keeps the roads, and a list for later.

A number is a filing. Change it and the road underneath still goes the same places.

On the record

Route 66. Chicago to the coast. Struck from the national system in 1985. The pavement stayed.

Old Route 666, Arizona. The record wants "Old Route 666 in Arizona" by the old name. Arizona renumbered its stretch 191 in 1992, and the other three states took 491 in 2003. The old number had a nickname, and drivers lifted the signs.

US 70. "The one through Waverly, Tennessee. Not I-70."

Held for later

"More roads for later":

  • US 61, the Blues Highway
  • The Natchez Trace
  • The Trail of Tears routes
  • The Green Book routes
  • El Camino Real
  • The Lincoln, Jefferson and Dixie Highways

None has been walked yet. The Courier is already on all of them.

Why these

The thesis is "the forgotten America." Roads the country knew by name and filed under something else. Every one of them connects to Ellis Road.

Standing

Open, under whatever number is on the sign this year.

Source of record: Cleared. Revised 2026-10-18.
