A "purpose-built, semi-autonomous thoughtform," made for one task.
It has a maker, a name and, if the maker did the work, an end date. What it does with its life is whatever that maker wrote down.
The build
Seven steps, in order:
- A statement of intent.
- A symbolic form to house it.
- A name.
- An energy source, what it feeds on: "usually the caster's attention."
- A lifespan and a kill-switch.
- Animation in gnosis.
- Dissolution.
Every spell feeds something. Step four is where the maker decides what, and most makers pick themselves.
The failure
"Forget the kill-switch and you get a parasite." A servitor with no end date keeps draining its maker long after the job is done.
Kin
Its big sibling is the egregore, a thoughtform sustained by a group's belief instead of one caster's attention.
Where it sits
Chaos magick is the working style that builds them, and the risk printed beside that style is "Unstable lifeforms and unauthorized doors."
